Shirley Marie Keller, born on August 6, 1928, in a rural Melvin farmhouse, where she would subsequently raise eight children and spoil numerous grandchildren, died on November 29, 2006, surrounded by some of the many lives she filled with joy and love.
The daughter of Ellis and Gladys (Howard) Stevens, and wife of Clifford Keller, Shirley never forgot the lessons she learned growing up in post-depression Iowaembrace life's opportunities at every chance and hold your family and friends very close. Plus if you want to do something, do it, whether it be parasailing over Puget Sound, taking the kids and grandkids on a scare-fest at Loon Lake, speaking out against U.S. intervention in Central America, or changing the decorations in your house as often as Martha Stewart.
Shirley was a member of many organizations: The United Methodist Church; Garden Club; Bridge Club; the Red Hat Society; T S & T Club; American Legion Auxiliary; Senior Spirit.
Traveling, power shopping, family get-togethers, and spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren, were some of the activities she embraced most in her later years. For Shirley, being with family and friends she loved, was the highlight of her life.
Shirley was proud of many things: her graduation from Ocheyedan High School; the gorgeous flowers she grew and landscapes she created; the loyalty of her friends, and of course her family.
Undeterred by cancer, which she courageously fought for 21 years, Shirley remained wonderfully independent until her final days. In passing, she is leaving a void in the hearts of many.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 59 years: Clifford Keller of Melvin, IA; seven children: Susan A. Algood and fianc Phil Swanson of Marshall, MN, Lyle L. Keller of Reno, NV, Robert P. Keller of Melvin, IA, Peggy A. Monier and spouse Jerry Monier of Sibley, IA, Steven J. Keller of San Francisco, CA, Michael R. Keller and spouse Rick Maruca of Seattle, WA, Danielle M. Keller and spouse Eldon Rhea of Seattle, WA; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Jennifer (Nate) Croatt and their children: Elliott and Keaton Croatt, Brian Monier, Traci (Clayton) Moore, Angie Algood, Michael Sierra Keller, Fae Rhea; sister-in-law: Phyllis Decker of Spencer, IA; brother-in-law: Duaine (Helene) Keller of Mesa, AZ.
