Joyce Engelkes, age 82, of Des Moines, IA, formerly of Rushmore, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Kavanagh House on 56th in Des Moines, IA. She was born February 19, 1930, in Worthington, to Joseph N. and Alice E. (Klein) Joul. She attended country school in District #12 Little Rock Township. Joyce graduated from Worthington High School in 1947. She graduated from Worthington Community College in 1949. In 1951, Joyce graduated from St. Olaf College, in Northfield, with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in English & Speech. She received her Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota in English & Library Science. She also received post graduate education from St. John’s University in Collegeville.

Joyce married Jerry Engelkes on June 16, 1953, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore. After their marriage, the couple lived in Rushmore. Joyce taught in Adrian for three years. She later taught & was librarian at Sibley-Ocheydan School for over thirty three years.

She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, where she had served as Elder, Sunday School Teacher, organist and was very active in the Presbyterian Synod. Joyce was also a member of the American Association University Women, Sanford Adrian Health Care Center Board, Blandin Leadership Training, First State Bank Board, Rushmore City Council and a lifetime member of the Worthington Concert Association, She enjoyed reading, gardening, music & was just a wonderful advocate for the city of Rushmore.

Joyce is survived by her niece, Brenda (Larry) Stanton, Des Moines, IA, & their children, Brandon & Robyn (Tim) Mulcahy; nephew, Bryan Joul, Colorado Springs, CO, & his children, Brianna, Rhian & Ashley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry, on December 20, 1980; and a brother, Bernard F. Joul.
