Marla Dorothea Dawson, 74, of May City, died on March 27, 2012, at her home.

She was born July 20, 1937 to the late John and Freda (Bremer) Slight in Canby, Minn. She spent her childhood years living near Ocheyeden, Iowa, and later Bagley, Iowa. She attended Bagley Public School and graduated from Bagley High School in 1955.

On May 4, 1957 she married Wayne E. Dawson in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson, Iowa. To this union two children were born, a son Dale and a daughter Marty Rae. The couple farmed near Bagley for a couple of years. She then moved to Guthrie Center, Iowa, where she worked for the Bar L Ranch where her children learned to ride horses at an early age.

She also lived in Crookston, Minn., where she worked on a potato farm, and in Elkhorn, where she drove truck for Mann Brothers Construction, Co.

While vacationing in Arizona, she became interested in turquoise jewelry and started a business in selling jewelry, T-shirts and crafts at flea markets and craft shows.

She then settled in May City, Iowa, where she owned and operated the May City Bar & Café. She continued her craft business as well until her health failed her.

She is survived by her son Dale (Jane), of Yankton, S.D.; grandchildren, Emily (Nate) Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Nicholaus Dawson of Yankton and Eric Dawson of Sioux Falls; great grandchildren Autumn, Presley, Gracelynn and Dawson Johnson; brother Jack Slight of Perry, Iowa; sister Myrna Koopman of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law Susie Slight of Boone, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She had many dear friends and was especially thankful for Judy, Nick and Kathy who cared for her during her illness.

She was further preceded in death by her daughter Marty Rae, brother Lyndon Slight and brother-in-law Don Koopman.

Funeral service was held March 31, at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel in Hartley, Iowa.

Inurnment was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley.
