Tena Steensma, age 97, of Sibley, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at the Country View Manor in Sibley.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at the Christian Reformed Church in Sibley. Rev. Roger Bouwman officiating.

Burial in the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 19, from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.

Tena Steensma was born on May 31, 1913, to William and Rena (De Boer) Smits, in Marrum Friesland, the Netherlands.

She attended school for one year in the Netherlands. When Tena was 7 years old, her family left for America by boat. They arrived in New York and traveled by train to Ocheyedan, Iowa, arriving on June 6, 1920. She lived with her family in various places near Ocheyedan, Iowa, Bigelow, Minnesota and Martin, South Dakota, where she attended country schools. Tena worked for various families with cleaning and childcare.

She was united in marriage to Peter Steensma on December 20, 1936. They farmed by Ocheyedan, Iowa, for 7 years, and in 1944, they moved to their farm near Sibley, Iowa, where they farmed for 35 years. In October of 1979, they built their new home in Sibley, Iowa, where they retired. Peter passed away on July 6, 1998.
She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Sibley, where she was active when she was able.
Tena enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, quilting, singing the Dutch Psalms and playing the organ.

She moved into Heartwood Heights in January of 2001. In November of 2007, she moved to the Country View Manor in Sibley, where she lived until Sunday, October 17, 2010, when she went to her heavenly home.

Tena is survived by two sisters: Anna Braaksma of Sibley, IA, Gertrude Heuseveldt of Grass Valley, CA; brother-in-law: Ted Pranger of Sibley, IA; her in-laws of Pete’s family: George Steensma of Luverne, MN, Ted and Bertha Steensma of Denver, CO, Fred and Rena Steensma of Lynden, WA, Gertrude Wassenaar of Worthington, MN, Ann Postma of Sibley, IA, Grace Steensma of Sheldon, IA, Beatrice Van Velzen of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Pete; her parents; three sisters: Anna Smits, Margaret Wolterstorff, Sadie Pranger.
