Gertrude (Mellema) Bosma, daughter of Sam and Minnie (Kuiper) Mellema, was born on January 29, 1916, in Fairmont, Minnesota.

Gertrude attended country school through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Gabe Bosma of Harris, Iowa, on January 30, 1940, in Ashton, Iowa. They lived in rural Harris, Iowa, where they farmed. In 1973, they moved to rural Ocheyedan, Iowa. In 1979, they retired and moved to town in Ocheyedan. Gabe passed away on May 10, 1999.

Gertrude was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan, where she was a member of Dorcas Aid. Gertrude and Gabe enjoyed traveling on bus trips through out the United States and Canada. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, canning fruits and vegetables for the family. She loved to crochet, read, and visit with family and friends. She enjoyed working with Trash for Cash at the Christian Grade School. Gertrude loved to sing – at church, while doing dishes, and with the girls around the piano at home. She knew all the old hymns, word for word. Gertrude was a devoted wife. In later years she was a wonderful caregiver to Gabe as he struggled with Alzheimer’s. She was a faithful prayer warrior. The family knew that they were covered with her unceasing prayers. Her most read book was the family Bible.

She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, with a strong faith, strong will and a tender heart.
