In Response To: Need any information on the family of Ira Waterman (Sue (Root) Waterman)

Hi,
I have quit a bit of info on this family. Ira was my Gr-greatgrandfather. His first wife was Julia Francis Lowther, who went by the name "Frank". They had three children Ada (1861-1934), William Hannibal (1865 to 1952, and Henry Milton (1867 - 1927). Julia Francis died in Moline Illinois. Following her death he moved with his children to his brother Hannibal Waterman's place in O'Brian county. Another brother Almeron also lived near them, with his family.

I have no record of him having children with Marietta.

Marietta was a cousin to Julia Francis. According to a biographical sketch in "Our Family" printed 1983, "Marietta was quit well to do and came to Sutherland to live with Ira. She brought among other things a wool carpet and a piano. It is assumed that she did not know she was going to take up housekeeping in a sod house. She was real unappy to say the least when the rain leaked through and ruined her rug and piano."

My father used to tell a bit about his grandfather (William) and apparently William and Milton made up a song about her to the tune of "Old Dan Tucker". Dad remembered parts of it, but I no longer know any of it.

After Ira died, William bought her a one way ticket to New York State, and never heard from her again. Until your e-mail, I had no idea what happened to her either. From what I heard from older family members, she was never happy in Sutherland, a condition propbably not made better by the fact that Ira apparently never got over loosing his first wife.

Ira died April 4 1895 and is burried in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Primgahr, O'Brian County, Iowa.

Ada never married.

William married Bertha Evelyn Cronk in Cheroke, IA Dec 10, 1891, and moved to Estherville, IA where both lived out their lives. They had 11 children.

Milton went to Colorado and was a miner at one time with a partner Frank Hull. His life becomes rather murkey after that. He may have died or according to one family source changed his name and moved further west.

I have Ira's linege back to the 1600's, and would be willing to share if this is the line you are seeking. I know very little more about the Lowther's and would be interested in what you may have.

I also have scanned copy of a slightly grainy copy of a tin tpye of Ira, and Julia. I also have some interesting family stories about Ira, and Milton in particular that I would be willing to share in a less public forum. :-)

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Diane
