Mervyn Lee Hoermann, the son of Vernell and Betty (Bruns) Hoermann was born January 6, 1951 in Primghar, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. He attended school in Gaza and Paullina, graduating in 1969. He was accomplished in Basketball and FFA, and earned his Iowa Degree. Merv proceeded to graduate from Estherville Junior College with an agronomy degree.
Merv took over the family farm near Gaza following the young death of his father. He enjoyed working for area elevators as a crop and feed specialist. Most recently he was employed by the USDA as an agriculture marketing specialist. He made many friendships with cattle producers and sale barn staff.
Merv was active with the O’Brien County Fair and will be remembered for helping with beef weigh-ins, barn set-up and show ring duties. He took great pride in his kids and grandkids exhibiting livestock at multiple fairs. Merv was a member of the O’Brien County Cattlemen’s and could be found behind the grill at many events.
As an avid snowmobiler, Merv took his arctic cat sled on trails in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Michigan. Early on he operated the trail groomer and taught youth safety classes. He held positions locally and for the Iowa State Snowmobiler’s Association, serving two terms as President and earning the Snowmobiler of the Year Award. He will be remembered as the cowboy at conventions because of his hat.
It was no secret that Merv was a Green Bay Packers fan. He was often seen wearing a Packer’s sweatshirt or cap and never missed a game. Merv also enjoyed time spent with friends at antique tractor rides and shows. He could be heard high up in the bleachers, cheering at his grandkids’ many games.
Merv was deeply touched by the love and support shown at his benefit this past December and cherished those final conversations with friends. He was grateful for cards, calls, and visitors and had a special bond with his Hospice team and friends at Happy Siesta.
Left to cherish his memory are his five children, Clint (Stephanie) Hoermann of Royal, Alexis (Rich) Frerk of Paullina, Amber (Eric) Erickson of Bondurant, Mandi (Shawn) Hoermann of Ramsey MN, Fand Clayton (Alicia) Hoermann of Nevada IA; five grandchildren, Arianna, Justice, Archer, Westen, and Conrad; two sisters, Carol Keating of Leawood KS and LaVonne Peters of Everly IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law Larry Keating and Terry Peters.
