William Fred Strampe, 76, Paullina, died at 6:10 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Mercy hospital, Sioux City, following a 1-car crash at 3:15 p.m. 2 ½ miles south of Le Mars on highway 75.

Highway Patrolman William Wruck and Sheriff James Mertes investigated.

They reported Mr. Strampe was driving his 1959 Oldsmobile north on highway 75 when he missed the curve at the Coad corner, went into the ditch knocking out four reflector posts, rolled end-over-end twice, knocked out a telegraph pole and wires, rolled twice more and then the car caught fire and burned.

Mr. Strampe was thrown from his car. He suffered two fractured arms and two fractured legs and other injuries.

Some unidentified young men who were passing by pulled the Paullina man away from the burning car and resulting grass fire. The Le Mars fire department was called.

Mr. Strampe was taken to the Floyd Valley hospital and then transferred by ambulance to the Sioux City hospital where he passed away. A lifelong resident of Paullina, he was born on November 1, 1893 in Paullina and married Grace Cockle on September 20, 1921 He was a veteran of World War II having served in France.

Survivors are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Don (Yvonne) Johnson of Paullina; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emil [Amanda] Rosenberg of Chandler, Minnesota, Mrs. Parley I. [Alvina] Derby of Sioux City and Mrs. Julius [Laura] Brehmer of Hartley; three brothers, Walter of Paullina, Harry of Sioux Rapids and Clarence of Sioux Falls.

Services were held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Gaudian Funeral Home with Elmer Stofferan of the Primghar Church of Christ officiating.

Pallbearers were Duane Dalton, Robert Thomson, Cloy Hirt, Phillip Peterson, Alfred Fritz and Burnell Ewoldt.

Honorary pallbearers were A.W. Anderson, Earl Benner, Albert Laue, Harold DeJong, Arthur Mericle and C.E. Cullison. James Thomson was soloist and sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord; Lead Me Home". Mrs. Clarence Hibbing was organist.

Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery near Paullina.
