Funeral services for Leota "Chris" Benner were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Saint John's Lutheran church in Sanborn, Iowa. Burial was in Pleasant View cemetery in Hartley, Iowa. Sanborn and Hartley Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Leota "Chris" Marie Benner was born March 16, 1923 in Hartley, Iowa to John Kenneth and Adelia (Brehmer) Christopher She was baptized on May 12, 1929, and confirmed at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley in 1937. She graduated from Hartley High School in 1941.
On August 25, 1944, Chris married Maynard B. "Benny" Benner in Jamestown, Rhode Island. To this union, two sons were born: Michael and Joseph. The Benners moved from Sanborn to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in May 1965, where Chris was employed by Sears Roebuck and Company for 20 years, retiring on January 1, 1985. They returned to Sanborn in 1988. The Benners were blessed to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994.
Due to declining health, Chris moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn in March of 2006, where she passed away at the age of 83 years, 29 days, Even in death, the couple was united - each passing away on April 15; Benny in 1997, and Chris in 2006.
Survivors include a son, Michael and Kethi Benner of Sanborn; a daughter-in-law, Song Benner of Severn Maryland; three granddaughters and their children: [redacted]; two grandsons and their children[redacted]; a special niece [redacted]; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were he parents; her husband, Benny; her son, Joseph; a sister, Ruth McAlpine, and a brother, Ray Christopher.
Slumber parties with her "little boys" Bradley and Brady were especially fun times for Chris. She had a special place in her heart for their dog, Sadie. She loved doing crossword puzzles. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
