Howard LeRoy Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Smith of Empire, Oregon, and former residents of Sanborn, Iowa, died very suddenly at his home in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, February 11. Howard was born August 5, 1908, at Vivian, South Dakota, and moved to Sanborn in 1916, where he attended school, and was graduated from the Sanborn High School in 1927. After moving to Los Angeles in 1936, he was continuously employed by the Whittier Lumber Company until the time of his death.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm Tuesday, February 17, at Grimm's Chapel, North Bend, Oregon, by the Rev. Clyde Ellis of Empire. Interment was at Sunset Cemetery, Coos Bay, Oregon.

Relatives attending the funeral were a sister, Mrs. Charles Frohwein, her husband and family; Mr. and Mrs. James Henderson and son Francis of Empire; Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Sid Reed of San Francisco, California. Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Hamilton are aunts of the deceased.
