James S. Hockert, who had been a resident of this community almost continuously for about 55 years, were held Monday afternoon at the Reiste Funeral Home. While Mr. Hockert had been in ill health for many years, his death came unexpectedly to the community. He had been critically ill only a few days.

Rev. A.A. Howe, pastor of the Methodist church, had charge of the services H.J. Behmer and Miss Jean Nott accompanied by Mrs. Everet Maas at the piano sang. The following obituary was read at the services:

1861- Jas. S. Hockert- 1939

James S. Hockert was born at Wheeling, Iowa,[sic] December 23, 1861. He died at Sutherland April 7, 1939, at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 15 days.

At the age of fourteen he moved with his parents to Elkhart, Indiana. In 1876, the moved to Iowa, settling at Gowrie, where with his father, they operated a general store. While at this place he used to travel over the prairie and gather furs from farmers and trappers.

He attended business college at Keokuk, Iowa. He edited and published the first newspaper at Gowrie, and for a time was traveling correspondent for the Des Moines Leader.

In 1885, he with his parents, moved to a farm near Sutherland, one year later moving to Sutherland where he was engaged in the mercantile business for several years.

He was married to Olive M. Bidwell October 1, 1888, and located at Bradgate, Iowa, where he conducted a general store, later returning to Sutherland where he again engaged in the mercantile business until his health failed and he was forced to give up business.

Three children were born: Florence Sellers of Central City, Iowa, Walter E. of Sutherland, and George B. who passed away at Arnolds Park in May 1935.

He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his wife and two children, one brother, one sister, and seven grandchildren.
