Dr. and Mrs. John C. Peterson, Jr.

Dr. and Mrs. John C. Peterson, Jr., prominent Hartley, Iowa, residents, were the victims of a fatal auto accident on Saturday, November 11, 1972, in eastern Iowa while returning home about four-fifteen in the afternoon. Dr. Peterson was 57 and Mrs. Peterson, 54.

John Cleve Peterson, Jr., the son of John Cleve and Christine Olson Peterson, Sr., was born at Sanborn, Iowa, on April 30, 1915. He graduated from Sanborn High School and entered the study of medicine at the University of Iowa where he was graduated from the College of Medicine in 1941.

Neva Lorraine Peterson, nee Boldan, the daughter of Guy and Alice Strand Bodan was born August 11, 1918, at Blue Earth, Minnesota. She graduated from Sanborn High School and worked in Iowa City, Iowa, with the telephone company there for five years.

John and Neva were united in marriage on May 30, 1942, at Duluth, Minnesota. Dr. Peterson was serving his internship there and following that, the couple came to Hartley, Iowa, where they were residents for thirty-one years.

Both "Doc Pete" as he was known, and Neva were very active and instrumental in many ogranizations and endeavors. Doc Pete had served both as officer and member for the following: Beacon Lodge 495 AF and AM, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, University of Iowa Alumni Council; he was Chief of Staff at the Hartley Community Hospital which he had helped organize and build, and was a member of the O'Brien County Medical Society, the American Academny of Family Physicias, the Iowa State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, Phi Rho Sigma Professional Medical Fraternity, Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society, and was on the Board of Directors of Blue Shield. He had recently been honored for his community service to the Hartley Community School where he had served as a director for seventeen years.

Neva was active and concerned in many areas and rarely refused any organization her talents, although the demands on her time were frequent. She was an officer and memberof the PEO, T.T.T., the Order of Eastern Star and Grand Cross, as well as Rainbow Board and as Rainbow Mother Advisor; she was currently serving on the municipal Library Board, and with Meals on Wheels. She had been chosen as the Future Homemakers of America Mother of the Year, and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.

Dr. and Mrs. Peterson were members of the Hartley United Methodist Church and actively served, Doc with the Building Committee and Neva with the prayer group, Friday Morning Bible Study, and the U.M. Pre-school.

Their loss to the community is tragic, and they will be long remembered.

Preceding him in death were Dr. Peterson's parents and Mrs Peterson's father; Ivan, brothers of Dr. Petrson and two sisters of Mrs. Peterson. They had the loss of one daughter, Jill Vonee Peterson.

Family members left to cherish their memory are their sons, John Cleve Peterson III and his wife, JoAnne of Mercer Island, Washington, and Jeffry Raymond Peterson and his wife, Kristin, of Solon, Iowa, two daughters, Jan Elyse and Jonie Kae of Hartley, two grandsons.

Interment was made in Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
