Mrs. Sarah Husted

After a lingering illness of several weeks, Mrs. Sarah Gillespie-Husted died at her home here in Sutherland Sunday, May 7, 1916.

Not for her our tears! Rather let us crown her grave with garlands; few of us will live as long or as well and fewer yet will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch.

But she is gone! Another name is stricken from the ever-lessening roll of our old settlers, and the children of this home circle are left to attest how sadly they will miss her. It must be so; these tender human ties cannot be severed without a pang. Yet in such a death there is no cause for grief. Her life's work was done and well-done. She had passed all along life's journey with its duties and cares and weary of its suffering and waiting, she lay down to rest.

The deceased was born January 23, 1837 in Glasgow Scotland. She came to America when about six years of age, and on November 12, 1859, was married to Albert B. Husted at Springfield, Michigan. Eight children were born to this union, all of whom are living with the exception of Susan who died in infancy. The children living are: A.A. Husted, E.W. Husted and E.B. Husted, all of Sutherland; Mrs. Fannie Nelson and Mrs. Florence Murphy of Sioux City; Mrs. Eva Gossnell of Hanley, Sask., Canada, and Mrs. Ally Thompson of Akron, Iowa.

Mrs. Husted was one of the pioneers of the county. She came with her husband to Iowa in 1867, and a year later they moved to their homestead seven miles south and east of Hartley. There were only ten people in the county at this time. She has lived in Sutherland for the past eight years, selling the old home place two years ago. She has been a Christian for fifty years and was a member of the Christian church in Sutherland at the time of her death. Well may her children cherish her memory as a precious legacy.

Funeral services were held at the home last Tuesday afternoon at 12:45 and at the Christian church at 1:00 o'clock in charge of the pastor, W.H. Hardaker. Interment was made in Hartley cemetery beside her husband.
