Services held for Mabel M. Smith

Memorial services for Mabel M. Smith were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 1996, at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina, Iowa, with Rev Donald Freeman officiating . "Dear Lord and Father of Man Kind," "Love Divine, All Love's Excelling," and "How Great Thou Art" were sung by the congregation. The organist was Mrs. Kay Grosvenor. The casket bearers were Ed Brown, Frew Brown, Jerry Cullison, Todd Brown, David Brown and Ron Cullison.

Graveside services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 21, 1996, at the [West] Prairie View Cemetery. Paullina. Iowa, under the direction of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home.

OBITUARY

Mabel Margaret Smith was born March 11, 1902, at Ireton, Iowa, the daughter of Robert C. and Elizabeth Stewart Brown. In 1912, her family moved to Paullina where she graduated from Paullina High School. She continued her education at Grinnell College graduating in 1923. She taught in the Vinton and Armstrong school systems.

On June 6, 1925, she was united in marriage to Marvin W. Smith. They were the parents of three daughters. The couple was involved in farming in Dale Township, O'Brien County, Iowa, for 39 years.

In 1958, Marvin was elected as a Representative in the Iowa Legislature. Mabel served as his legislative secretary for the 16 years he served both in the House of Representatives and Senate. The couple traveled extensively throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Marvin preceded her in death on October 13, 1982, in Paullina.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina, actively involved in the U.P.W. of the Church, P.E.O., Federated Woman's Club, O'Brien ' County Girls 4-H work, Republican Women and she served on the Paullina Public Library Board many years including the time of the constructing the present Paullina Library. She was a pianist and organist for the First Presbyterian Church for over 25 years.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Helen and Lynford Pauling of Paullina; Frances and Don Burgess of Denison and Margaret Ann and E. Brian McGregor of Lakewood, Colorado; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; great-grandson, David Pauling, parents; three brothers, Stewart, Robert and Wallace; and two sisters, Helen Brown in infancy and Marian Brogan.
