Services held for Donald L. Johnson

Funeral services for Donald L. Johnson were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2002, at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Freeman Officiating. "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden" were sung by Jim Thomson. The organist was Verla Hibbing.

The casket bearers were Chris Sholly, Seth Johnson, Roger Willey, Steve Kenney, Ron Chapman and Charles Traver. A flag presentation was conducted by the Russell West Post of the American Legion. Interment was at Prairie View Cemetery at Paullina, Iowa, under the direction of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home.

OBITUARY

Donald L. Johnson, the son of Lenus and Alice Frasier Johnson, was born January 1, 1924, in Cherokee, Iowa. He received his education in Cherokee schools.

In February of 1943 he joined the Army-Airforce serving during W.W. II in Iceland before his discharge in January of 1946.

On February 13, 1951, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Strampe in Worthington, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple settled in Paullina. He operated a Phillips 66 Station in Cherokee before he joined construction companies as a carpenter working out of Calumet and later Sheldon. In the mid 1960's he began employment with the City of Paullina where he worked until ill health forced his retirement in 1979.

He passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at the Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar after being stricken at his home, reaching the age of 78 years and 8 days.

He was a member of the Russell West Post of the American Legion of Paullina. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and playing cards.

Don is survived by his wife, Yvonne Johnson of Paullina; two sons: Barry Johnson and special friend Jacque Harvey of Cherokee and Patchy and his wife, Sharon Johnson of Sutherland; a daughter, Valerie Sholly and special friend Delbert Dittman of Hospers; also nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; also a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
