John Cleve Peterson, Sr.

John Cleve Peterson, Sr., the son of Benjamin and Martha Anderson Peterson, was born May 4, 1875 at Ishpeming, Michigan. He passed into eternal rest January 13, 1962 after a lingering illness. He had reached the age of 86 years, 8 month, and 9 days. For the past six months he had been in failing health, and for most of that time had been at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Peterson, Jr.

He had been a Railroad Conductor for many years on the Milwaukee Railroad. He retired from active work in 1956.

He was married to Chistine Ida Olson at Saint Louis Park, Minnesota on July 10, 1901. To them were born five children, one of who, a son, Cleve Benjamin, died in infancy. The family made their home at Sanborn, Iowa, from 1901 until 1956, and have resided in Hartley since that time.

Mr. Peterson was a member of the Methodist Church, and had been active in the work of the church, as well as the community. He had served on the Sanborn School Board, as well. He was a 50 year Mason, having joined that organization in 1905. He was a member of Consistory No. 5 at Sioux City, and of the Abu Bekr Shrine. He as also a member of the Order of Railroad Conductors, and had served as Secretary for many years.

Besides his infant son, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jill Peterson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Christina of Hartley, his four sons and their wives: Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Peterson of Everly, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Peterson of Milwaukee, Dr. and Mrs. John C. Peterson of Hartley, and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Peterson of Unity, Wisconsin; a brother, Andrew of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, ten grandchildren, other relatives and a great many friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 16, at the Methodist church in Hartley, Rev. D.D. Samuelson officiating. Masonic rites were conducted at graveside by Sanborn. Interment was made at Pleasant View Cemetery. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
