Charlotte Alice Herwig, the daughter of Orin and Gertrude (Wolken) Long was born August 29, 1928 in Cherokee, Iowa. She moved with her family to the Paullina area where she received her education graduating from Paullina High School in 1946. After her graduation from high school she was employed as a telephone operator in Cherokee, Iowa. On February 24, 1948, she was united in marriage to Wayne B. Herwig in Hartley, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Carol, Wayne Jr., Franklin and Steven. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Peterson, Gaza, Sutherland and Larrabee areas before moving to Paullina in 1959. For many years Charlotte worked at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute. She also worked for a local horse magazine and in later years operated the Paullina Laundry mat. Her husband preceded her in death on January 11, 1991 in Primghar, Iowa. Charlotte remained in the family home where she passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2014 reaching the age of 85 years, 4 months and 10 days.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina and was a member of the Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her cat, Rascal, the visits from her son’s German Shepherd’s, reading, playing cards, gardening and watching sports on T.V .
Charlotte is survived by children, Carol Herwig-Morgan of Washington, D.C.; Franklin Herwig of Cherokee, Iowa and Steven Herwig of Paullina, Iowa; grandchildren, Brad, Matthew, David, Casey and Rebecca Herwig; step-grandson, Douglas Ashley and a great grandson, Michael Herwig; a brother and his wife, William and Janet Long in Georgia; a sister-in-law, Burlea Long in Florida; nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Wayne Jr.; her parents and one brother, Frank Long.
