Esther (Brinkert) Hakeman was born on January 10, 1909 in Primghar, Iowa, to Henry and Martha (Reidemann) Brinkert. Her early childhood years were spent in Primghar, and she attended high school and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1927.
On October 15, 1928, she married Cornyle Hakeman, and to this union five sons were born: Donald, Gerald, Robert, William, and Thomas.
During their marriage, the Hakemans resided in Sanborn and Cornyle worked at the Farmers Elevator there. They began farming outside of Sanborn in 1935 and retired into town in 1974. Cornyle passed away in 1988. Esther continued to live in her own home until moving to Prairie View Manor.
She was a resident at Prairie View Home from October, 2000, until her death there on April 10, 2006 at the age of 97 years, three months.
Esther loved gardening and being outdoors. Her baking and sewing skills went unmatched, and she enjoyed a good game of Bridge or a board game, especially Scrabble. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the LWML and the Farm Bureau. Most important in her life was her family. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her sons, Don and Marna of Sanborn. Jerry, also of Sanborn, Bob and Chris of Huron, Ohio, Bill and Ande of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Tom and Candy of Browns Point, Washington; sixteen grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren, one sister, Louise Brandt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sisters in law Wilma Hakeman, Margaret Hickey and Norma Brinkert.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, two brothers and two sisters.
