Henry Van Veldhuizen (1899-1993)

Henry Van Veldhuizen, the son of Gysbertus and Aartje (Van Den Sanden) Van Veldhuizen, was born at Ede, Holland, on November 8, 1899. He came to America at the age of eight and lived for two years in Hull, and then on farms near Middleburg, Iowa, and Bigelow, Minnesota, and then at Sanborn, Iowa. He received two years of his education in Holland and continued in country schools near Hull and Middleburg.

He was united in marriage to Nellie Kroese at the home of her parents northeast of Sanborn on March 6, 1930, and to this union, four children were born. Following their marriage, they were engaged in farming east of Sanborn. They retired and moved into town in March, 1966. Nellie died on December 30, 1971. Henry was united in marriage to Josina Bergsma on December 1, 1981, at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Henry and Jo resided in Sheldon during their married life. He died at Northwest Iowa Health Center at Sheldon, Iowa, on May 17, 1993 at the age of ninety-three years, six months and nine days.

He is survived by his wife, Josina of Sheldon; his children: Esther and Robert Zonnefeld, and Marilynn and H. Dale DeBoer, all of Sibley, Gene and Jeane Van Veldhuizen, all of Sanborn; his step son and wife, Jim and Marge Bergsma of Tucson, Arizona, and his step daughter and husband, Coreen and John Van Sloten of Rock Valley; 13 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Guysbert of Hospers, and two sisters: Johanna Prins of Primghar and Nell Boterhoek of Hospers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nellie, one infant grandson, three brothers: John, Gerrit and Ben, one half brother, Evert, and a half-sister, Martha Kuiper.

Henry was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sheldon and the Psalm Singers. He had served as an elder and deacon at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn, and had also served as a Sunday School teacher there for many years. He will be remembered for the enjoyment he received from his hobbies of fishing and gardening. He was very proud of his family and always enjoyed visiting with his many friends and family members.

Funeral services were held May 20 at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon with The Rev. Dr. Warren Heitbrink and The Rev. Kenneth Tenckinck officiating.

Casket bearers were Dan Van Veldhuizen, Gordon Zonnefeld, Roger DeBoer, John Farrell, David Schutte and Kenneth Brunsting. Honorary bearers were Dough Lyman, Luke Corso, Chad McKee and Ryan Van Dyke.

Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn, with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
