A man was run over on the crossing near the oil mill by engine 184 of the Milwaukee road. The victim was presumed to be on his way home when hit. The wheels passed over both legs and amputation will take place this morning by Drs. Couniff & Shollabarger. The cuts will bo made above the knee on one leg and below on the other. He was under the influence of liquor and would make no intelligent statements last night. From what he did say it is presumed he had been at work on tho excavating job at Desparois' building. He gave the name of Tom Jones, although it is doubtful whether it is correct. He appears anxious to conceal his identity. The patrol took him to thr Samaritan home.

Sunday morning's Journal says:

The man who was run over near the oil mill on Friday evening by a Milwaukee engine and taken to tho Samaritan home went through a severe surgical operation about 1 o'clock yesterday moring. One leg was amputated midway between the knee and ankle joint and tho toes of the other foot were taken off. It is not certain but another amputation will have to be made at the hip joint of the log from which the toes wore amputated. The engine rolled the man two lengths of a car and dislocated the log. Tho ligaments at the hip are terribly mangled and it is impossible to set the limb. Another severe wound was made at tho knee of tho same leg. Yesterday afternoon tho unfortunate man rallied from the effects ot his injuries with more strength and firmness than was expeoted, but Dr. Conniff pronounces his chances very slim for recovery.

His name is Milton Thornton instead of Tom Jones, and his place of residence is on west Fourth street in Hornick's addition. He is a pointer by trade, but has been for some time in the employ of John Todd, the house mover. Lately he worked with the excavating gang ot the Desparois building. Acquaintances say he is a hard-working and very industrious man.
