Dorothy (Wynja) Uittenbogaard (1932-2017)

Dorothy Uittenbogaard, the daughter of Henry and Dora (Eenkhoorn) Wynja, was born on Sept. 14, 1932, in Steen, Minnesota. She graduated from Sheldon High School.

On July 11, 1952, Dorothy was united in marriage to Marvin Uittenbogaard at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon. Marv continued to serve in the Marine Corps until 1954 with the support of his wife, Dorothy. They made their home in California until Marv was honorably discharged. The couple then moved back to Sheldon where Dorothy began working at the Sheldon Newspaper office before becoming a full-time homemaker. While at home, she was a dedicated wife and mother. Life circled around her family: preparing meals, housecleaning and caring for their needs.

Dorothy was an active member of Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon where she taught Bible School, Sunday School and Catechism. She liked going to Bethel’s Young Couple’s Club and the church’s Sunday night hymn sings with her family. Dorothy loved family vacations and wintering in Florida and treasured time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed snowmobiling, gardening, working in the yard and was known to spend hours on the phone visiting with her dear friends and family.

Dorothy was always one who cared for her family and others at their time of need. She was an encourager and supporter of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was very proud of them. Everyone who knew her thought of her as kind and special. This sweet, sweet lady had a heart of gold, was always smiling and sharing her love.

Dorothy went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 20, 2017, reaching the age of 84 years, 6 months and 6 days.

Left to cherish Dorothy’s memory are her four children and their spouses, Jerry, Judy, Sherri, and Paula; seven grandchildren,[redacted]; 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way [redacted]; and also many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marv, on Oct. 20, 2015; and siblings, James at age 7, Wessel Wynja, Chris Wynja, Christina Ruisch, Joe Wynja, Jim Wynja and Edna DeGroot.
