Private Arnold Frederick Stoterau was born May 6, 1891, four miles southwest of Hartley, Iowa. At the time of his death he was 27 years, 5 months and 6 days old.
He attended the rural school until the year 1907-1908 when he attended tthe Hartley Public School. He spent all his life at home on his father's farm in this community until he answered the call of his country on June 25, 1918, when he entrained for Camp Dodge with thirty other O'Brien County boys, and became a private in Co. G. 350th Infantry in which he served until the last. He was transferred from Camp Dodge to Camp Upton, N. Y. on August 5th, and from there sailed on August 15th for France.
On November 16th his parents received the sad message that he passed away on October 22nd of Spanish Influenza.
He leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother; Mr. and Mr. Otto Stoterau; one brother, Albert; and one sister, Mrs. Leland Pohlman, whose husband also is serving in France; and one who must not be forgotten, Miss Lillie Frick who was his true and faithful friend and who had so joyously awaited his return, but all in vain. He also leaves an aged grandmother, who resides at Durant, Iowa; also a large number of relatives and a host of friends who will deeply mourn his loss.
He was loved and respected by all and was a favorite among his friends. He did his duty and served his country. A noble life was given for a noble cause. Let us hope that the sister's husband will have a safe and speedy return and bring joy to the home now cast in gloom.
Memorial Service to be held at the Methodist Church, Sunday, November 24th at 2:00 o'clock.
