Ernest Frederick Gus "Shorty" Peters (1909-1968)

Ernest Frederick Gus (Shorty) Peters was born August 19, 1909 at Paullina, O'Brien County, Iowa. He was the son of Charles and Minna Peters. At an early age he was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the May City Church. He attended country schools in Iowa.

On August 13, 1942 he was united in marriage to Florence Marie Helena Beck; the marriage taking place at Spencer, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with three children.

After their marriage they lived at Hartley, Iowa for several years. The family then moved to Pipestone, Minnesota for a time. They then moved back to Hartley, Iowa. In 1951 they moved to a farm near Bingham Lake, Minnesota and have since resided there. Shorty has not been in the best of health the past few years and has had to take life easy. Although he was not well, his sudden death came as a real shock to his family and many friends.

He passed away at his home early Thursday morning, January 11, 1968. At the time of his death he was 58 years, 4 months, and 22 days of age.

Shorty was a quiet and unassuming man. He was well thought of by his family and was a good and trusted workman. He derived a great deal of pleasure from his home, family, and acquaintances.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Florence of Bingham Lake, Minn., and two children, Larry Lee Peters of Bingham Lake, Minn., and Lola Mae (Mrs. James Hesebeck) of Ocheyedan, Iowa. He also leaves two grandchildren, Steven James and Sherwin Lee Hesebeck. Also surviving are five brothers and two sisters, Bill Peters of Gillett Grove, Iowa; Harry of Webb, Iowa; Rosella (Mrs. Everett Stone) of Webb, Iowa; Herman of Lake Park, Iowa; Fred of Hartley, Iowa; Minnie (Mrs. Alfred Duis) of Harris, Iowa; and Bob Peters of Hartley, Iowa. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by bis parents; one brother, Edward; and one son, Donald Ray Peters, in infancy.

Last rites were held at Trinity Lutheran Church of Mt. Lake, Minn., with interment in Pleasant View cemetery, Hartley, on January IS.
