Friedrich Christoph Meyer was born Dec. 21, 1848 in Schafwedel, Hannover, Germany. When he was eight days old he was baptized into the Christian faith and on March 29, 1863 he renewed his covenant with the Lord by his own mouth on the day of his confirmation. At the age of 19, or in 1868, he came to America. He came alone, as only member of his family, some of his brothers and sisters coming later. After remaining a short time at Reedsburg, Wis., where he first went to he moved to Coopers Grove, Cook Co., Ill. After he was in this county about five years the sad news was sent to him beyond the waters that his father, mother, and one brother had died within two weeks. This news affected him greatly and only his faith and trust in the Lord prevented him from despairing.

On April 8, 1877 he was united in happy wedlock with Miss Alvine Hoermann. The marriage ceremony was performed by the sainted Rev. F. Doederlein. This Christian couple was blessed with four children, three sons and one daughter. One son, the eldest, was called out of this life at the age of nine years. The rest of the children with their mother and their respective helpmates and children mourningly behold the father laid away in his last resting place on earth.

In 1860 the family came to O'Brien Co., Iowa, settling on a farm in Caledonia township, a short distance south of Germantown. Here they lived till the couple retired from active farmlife in 1906 and moved to Paullina. Both Mr. and Mrs. Meyer were hard workers in their day and through the blessings of the Lord and saving they were able to accumulate considerable wealth.

The deceased was as ardent member of the Lutheran church and always desirous to the the bidding of the Lord. He was one of the first members of the church in Germantown, in which he held office for 10 years. After moving to Paullina he became as active member of the local congregation. He has been a member of our church board for about 10 years, holding the office of chairman or president of the congregation for about 13 years.

He was not a man much interested in new things, holding the old, well tried ones were always the best. The newer inventions did not interest him much, but when on Christmas eve at his son's home he heard the old Christmas songs coming over the radio from our KFUO at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., his heart was filled with glee and he was happy to join in singing these songs.

He has blessed with good health til about two years ago when he lost considerable of his strength and vitality through an attack of gall bladder trouble and pleurisy. With his wife he spent a sort time at Excelsior Springs, Mo., this fall trying to regain his strength. He came back feeling comparatively well. It was only since Tuesday morning of last week that he was confined to his bed, and no one thought that his end was so near. Very unexpectedly he breathed his last at about 9:5 Thursday morning, December 31. He attained the age of 77 years and 10 days. His death is mourned by his bereaved widow, three children and their respective helpmates, twelve grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters and a great number of more distant relatives and friends. The three children are: Wm. F. Meyer, Albert H. Meyer and Mrs. W.D. Engelke.
