Gail Boardman (1920-2008)

Gail Harold Boardman, the son of William and Tillie (Knutson) Boardman was born July 1, 1920 at Milford, Iowa. He
attended schools in Milford and the surrounding area. He was inducted into the Army on August 20, 1942, serving with the 8th Calvary in the 44th division of the recon squad. He did recon duty in Germany going behind enemy lines to gather
information from the Germans. Before leaving the U.S. for the European Theater, he went to cook and bakers school in
Ft. Riley, Kansas and cooked for the Officers. He was discharged from the service on November 30, 1945.

He came to the Sutherland area. On January 9, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Steuck at the Bethel Lutheran Church in
Sutherland. The couple farmed in the Sutherland area for many years before Gail began working for Arnie Leng, where he worked for 30 years.

The couple retired in 1992 and moved into Sutherland to spend their retirement years. The last couple of years they have lived at the Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee. He passed away at the Cherokee Regional Health Center in Cherokee on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, reaching the age of 88 years, 4 months and 4 days.

He was baptized on September 30, 1947 and later confirmed and was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland and the Sutherland American Legion Post # 152 of Sutherland.

Gail is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lorraine Boardman of Cherokee; a daughter, Marla and her husband, Ted Aldag of Kiron, Iowa; a son, Lonny Boardman of Cherokee; nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Margie Robbins of Arnolds Park, Iowa and Kathryn Branstetter of Milford, Iowa;
also nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-granddaughter, five brothers, six sisters and his in-laws, Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Steuck.
