ALICE (Dykstra-Baker) STEELE 1908 — 2005

Alice (Dykstra-Baker) Steele, the daughter of Douwe and Meindertje (Tolsma) Dykstra was born at Sexberium, the Netherlands on February 8, 1908. At the age of 12 she came to the United States with her parents and brother and they made their home in the Sanborn and Melvin area. She began her education in the Netherlands and completed her schooling at a country school north of Sanborn.

Alice was united in marriage to Jobie Baker on February 28, 1927 at Melvin Ia. They farmed in South Dakota until returning to the Melvin area in 1932. Jobie died on October 22, 1935. Alice and her children moved to Sanborn to live with her family

She was united in marriage to William Steele on Nov 21, 1958 They continued to make their home in Sanborn. Bill died on Dec 13, 1976.

Alice became a resident of Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on September 4, 1990 and she died there on October 26, 2005, at the age of 97 years, eight months. 18 days

She is survived by her family: Margaret Foley of Sanborn, Ia, Frank Baker of North Little Rock Ark . and George and Carol Baker of Buena Park Calif.; 18 grandchildren 28 great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, a daughter. Minnie Freier. a son, Dewey Baker, a daughter-in-law Marilyn Baker, a son-in-law, Leonard Foley, four brothers: George, Minzo, Frank, and Charlie, and two sisters, Elizabeth Terpstra and Irene Vander Pol.

Alice had been a member of the First Presbyterian church of Sanborn and the Rebekah Lodge. Special interests of Alice included knitting and crocheting. She will always be remembered for lovingly caring for her family.

Funeral services were held November 1 at First Presbyterian Church in Sanborn with Rev Gregg Johnson officiating. Casket bearers were Gordon Baker. Alex Baker. Robert Baker. Bob Baker. Brian Baker and Michael Foley. Jeane Van Veldhuizen and Harriet Van Veldhuizen sang "In the Garden." and "How Great Thou Art." Congregational hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Arlene Dykstra was organist. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn, with the Sanborn/Hartley Funeral Home in charge.
