HENRY C. PHILIPH

Henry Christian Philiph, son of William and Augusta [Mundt] Philiph, was born in Clayton County, near Clayton Center, Iowa. November 1lth, 1863. While yet an infant, he was received into communion with the Divine God through holy baptism in the Lutheran faith. At the age of 6 years, he moved with his parents to Benton County, near Luzerne, Iowa. At the age of 12 years be became a communicant member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Luzerne through the rite of confirmation. As a young man, he worked as a farm hand around Luzerne and later on at Remsen, Iowa. In 1889, he came to Northwest Iowa where he farmed in partnership with his brother William for several years.

On March 9, 1893, he was united in marriage to Gesina Eden. This union was blessed with nine children.
Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Philiph located on a farm of their own in Baker Township. Osceola County, where they lived until March 1st, 1921, when they retired and moved to Hartley.

Mr. Philiph was blessed with a healthy robust life, never being seriously ill at any time. At the age of 91 years, he had the misfortune of falling and breaking his hip. He recovered from this and was able to walk again with the aid of a cane. Three years later a blood clot developed in his right leg and it was necessary to amputate it. About a month ago, it was found necessary to amputate his other leg. He seemed to have had recovered satisfactorily from this operation and plans were made to move him from the hospital to his home again, but God in his infinite wisdom had decreed otherwise. On Sunday evening he went into a coma from which he never fully regained consciousness. He passed away Wednesday evening, August 26th, at 5:20 p.m. at the Hand Hospital, reaching the age of 95 years, 9 months and 15 days.

He was from a family of ten children, four sisters and five brothers. All but one brother preceded him in death. He is Ben Philiph of Spencer, Iowa.

His wife preceded him in death in 1955 and also a son Victor in 1920.

He is survived by four sons; Herman of Chokio, Minnesota; Gerald of Levittown, Pennsylvania; Edwin and Robert of Hartley; four daughters; Mrs. Emma Schultz of May City, Iowa; Mrs. LuVerne Peters of Westbrook, Minnesota; Mrs. Elsie Hoper and Mrs. Helen Wacker of Hartley; also 17 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were six grandsons: Delbert Philiph, Donald Peters, James Hoper, Duane Philiph, Kenneth Wacker and Merle Wacker. Music was provided by Herb Weber, Lester Peters, Betty Hurt and Renee Henning, with Carolyn Paulson, organist. Interment was made in Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley, Ia.
