JAMES VAN ZYL

James Van Zyl, son of Roelof and Johanna Van Boven Van Zyl, was born April 4, 1888 on a farm near Alton, Iowa and passed away Sunday, August 19, 1951 at his home in Sanborn. Mr. Van Zyl grew up on the home place near Alton which was his birthplace.

On February 23, 1911 he was united, in marriage with Hattie Vanden Burg of Orange City. They farmed three years on a place south of Newkirk, then lived five years in Osceola county. They moved to Springfield, S. D. remaining there nine years. In 1928 they returned to Sioux county, living near Sheldon. Seven years later they moved to a farm south of Sanborn, and two years later to an acreage at the south edge of Sanborn, where they lived until April, 1950. Mr. Van Zyl retired and they moved into town.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Zyl. Andrew passed away in 1936 at the age of 20. Ralph James, of Corvallis, Ore., and three daughters, Anna, Mrs. Andrew Waterman, of Myrtle, Ore.; Lillian, Mrs. Millard Frankenfield, of Pacoima, Calif., and Ruth, Mrs. Richard Vander Tuig, of Melvin, with the mother, survive him. He also leaves nine grandchildren; two brothers, Guy, of Sheldon and Ralph, of Alton, and three sisters: Mrs. Trina Vander Baar, Long Beach, Calif., Cornelia, Mrs. H. A. B. DeHaan, Orange City, and Mary, Mrs. Conrad Muilenburg, Sioux Falls S. D.

A brother, Rev. Bart Van Zyl, preceded him in death.

Mr. Van Zyl had been in failing health for several years but had been around as usual and had been down town last Friday. He had eaten a good breakfast Sunday morning and complained of feeling tired and said he felt like sleeping. At noon when his wife went to his bedside to call him for dinner she found he had slept away.

He was a member of Bethel Reformed church at Sheldon.

Funeral services are being conducted this (Thursday) afternoon at one o'clock in the family home and at two o'clock in Bethel Reformed church at Sheldon by Rev Wm E. Vanden Berg, of the Sanborn First Reformed church and Rev John W. Brink, of Archer.

Pallbearers chosen are Al Kuiper, Jelle Offringa, James DeYoung, Chas Boone, John Van Gelderen, Walter Van Rees. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn.

The son, Ralph and daughter, Mrs Anna Waterman, are expected here for the services.
