June E. Kluender the daughter of Parents - John C. and Katherine (Straub) Ebel, June was born on the family farm near Paullina and was baptized on her birth date. She attended the country school close to the farm through the fifth grade, grades 6, 7 and 8 at Zion Lutheran School in Paullina and graduated from Paullina High School in 1940. She went to National Business Training College in Sioux City and worked at clerical positions in Sioux City and Primghar.

On Easter Sunday, April 25, 1943, she married Elmer G. Kluender. They spent their married life on farms in the Hartley and Paullina area before retiring from the farm in 1969. They were married for 33 years before his death on July 26, 1976.

In spite of her respiratory problems and cancer, June remained in her home until her death in her favorite room, the sewing room.

A big part of June's life was the relationships she made while working at the local department store for 30 years. When garment alterations were requested by customers, she gladly offered to make those alterations at no charge to the customer. This eventually developed into the thriving sewing business which was her passion and the joy of her life.

June displayed her strong faith in her Lord in so many ways, including leading Friendship Bible Classes. She provided a long and distinguished service to her church and community. Some of her many achievements were Secretary-Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce for 9 years and at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina as Church Treasurer, Chairman of Stewardship, President of Ladies' Aid and Dorcas, Treasurer of the Cherokee Zone LWML, and served four terms on the Evangelism Committee.

She lived her philosophy for life of loving one another by volunteering to care for others, whether they were elderly, sick, or just people who needed a special touch from someone.

June was an avid reader and list maker. She liked to keep track of the books she had read and her list for approximately the last 15 years shows she enjoyed over 600 books and more than 50 different authors.
