Mrs. Harry Dutton passed away at her home last Friday evening, a victim of that dread disease cancer, from which she had suffered for many months. Mrs. Dutton was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a good friend who was blessed with a sunny disposition. Her life was gentle, but like the still waters, it was deep. In her heart of hearts she carried those she loved and her hand was never weary, her step never failed in ministering unto, caring for, waiting upon those who were in any way dependent upon her. Early last year she began to fall. An operation proved her to be afflicted with the dread cancer. During the months of her illness the best of aid was given her and in her home she was tenderly cared for. She bore her affliction with fortitude. Recently as the disease made its severe inroads her strength waned rapidly. Well may her children cherish her memory as a precious legacy, and we fain would say a word of comfort to the stricken ones. We can but let our tears flow in sympathy with theirs and point them to the promise, "At eventide it shall be light."

Your place is empty;
you have gone away.
Oh, how we miss you
every day.

Tears fill our eyes
to see your empty chair,
And folded carefully away
the clothes you used to wear.

How empty seems the house;
our hearts are sore;
For oh, the place that knew you
will know you nevermore.

Your place is empty;
how our sad hearts yearn—
If that could only be—
for your return.

God give us grace and strength,
our faith and hope renew,
For you will not return to us,
but we will go to you.

Mrs. Ella Anna Dutton, nee Thiele, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Thiele, was born at Dysart, Tama county, Iowa, March 13, 1888, one of a family of ten children. As an infant she was consecrated to the Lord in the sacred rite of baptism and later attended the Sunday school of the Evangelical church of Dysart, where she was instructed in God's word. She attended the public schools and as a young girl came to Hartley in 1901 in company with her parents and other members of the family.

Here she grew to womanhood and in 1908 was wedded to Harry Dutton, of Hartley. The couple made their home on a farm. Five children came to bless their union, of whom two, a daughter, Pearl, and a son, Merle, died at an early age.

She departed this life Friday evening, Dec. 28, at 9:15, having attained the age of 40 years, 9 months and 9 days.

Her early death is mourned by her devoted husband, Harry Dutton, and her three daughters, Velma, Lois and Opal Mae Dutton; her mother, Mrs. Christina Thiele; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Rude, Mrs. Lillian Hopfe and Mrs. Carrie Schulz; three brothers, John Thiele, Charles Thiele and George Thiele; six brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Monday afternoon, Dec. 31, at the home and at the Methodist church, with Hev. Albrecht in charge. Mrs. H. Pike and Miss Emma Fischer, accompanied by Miss Lela Adolph, rendered suitable anthems. A service also was held by the Genevieve Rebekah lodge, of which deceased was a member. Interment followed at Pleasant View cemetery.
