John Hirt, the son of Henry and Alvina Hirt, was born May 2, 1902, near Hartley where he lived most of his life. He attended school southeast of town and farmed for 15 years before going to Detroit and working in a defense plant during the war. He returned to the farm and lived with his sister, Mrs. Robert Sampson, the past fourteen months.
For the past four or five years he has been under doctor's care and on July 15, 1957, he died of cancer. He reached the age of 55 years, 2 months and 13 days.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed church and was a member of Beacon lodge No. 495 A.F. and A.M.
He is survived by his sister, Mildred (Mrs. Robert Sampson), his brother-in-law and three nieces and three nephews.
Funeral services were held in Trinity United Church of Christ on Friday, July 19, with Rev. R. F. Maschmeier officiating.
Pallbearers were Wayne Tibbetts, Art Lage, Wilbert Fredericks, Forest Newcomer, Herman Johnsion and Arlo Snider.
Mrs. Harrison Pike accompanied Red Wagner and Wayne Muhs as they sang "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" and "In the Sweet By and By."
