Jacob Friedrick Ferdinand Plath (1862-1927)

Jacob Friedrick "Ferdinand" Plathe [sic] was born in Meldorf. Germany, January 28, 1862; dying at the family home north of Paullina, Iowa, Monday, March 21, at 4 A. M., having reached the age of 65 years, 1 mouth and 21 days. His health has not been as good as usual for nearly a year, but until last October his condition was not considered alarming. Since that time he has suffered severely with heart trouble, and although at a hospital at two different times, was unable to secure permanent relief, and during the past few weeks has been confined closely in the home, patiently waiting the final summons, which all knew could not be far distant.

On May 10, 1887 he was united in marriage to Emma Emeile Amanda Hinz, and to this union ten children have been born , two of whom died in infancy before the family left Germany. Two sons have preceded the father in death since the family has has been in the Paullina vicinity; Max dying November 20, 1918, shortly after having received an honorable discharge from the United States army. Julius bad been in poor health for some time and died December 5th of last year following an operation performed as a last resort.

In 1903, the family came to the United States, making their first home in this country, near Sutherland, Iowa, December 13, of that year. The home was continued in the Sutherland community for several years when the family moved to Trosky, Minn., remaining there for five years. Paullina community has been the home since the return from Minnesota several years ago.

Besides two brothers, Julius and Walter, and three sisters, Mrs. Ferdinand Butler and Mrs. Claus Rogers, all in Germany, and Mrs. Otto Turner of Sutherland, Iowa; the wife and six children, Mrs. George Elder, Ella, Amanda, Walter, Fred and Earnest, all of Paullina, are left to mourn the passing of a kind indulgent husband and father, a dependable friend and good neighbor.

Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday, Dr. H.P. Morgan, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment was in Prairie View Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Rudolph Rohwer, Ben Rohwer, Wm. Simm, Herman Mericle, John Peters and W.A. Branhuver.
