Richard Henry Gathman, son of George and Augusta Gathman, was born March 5, 1892, at Wells, Minn., and passed away at Hartley, Iowa, Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 8, 1948, at 2 o'clock.

His family moved to Hartley when Dick was three years old. He attended the grade school here at Hartley and, with the exception of eight years in California, his life was lived in the vicinity of Hartley and Everly. He was baptized in infancy in the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Wells, Minn.

On January 10, 1917, Dick was united in marriage to Bessie Emry of Ossian, Iowa. To this union were born two sons, Gordon now residing at Bellevue, Nebr., and Walter of New Haven, Conn.

Dick was a friend of all who knew him. He thought of himself last, always ready and willing to help in the time of need. Those who knew him best speak of him as a man of kindness and brotherly spirit.

He leaves to cherish his memory his widow, Bessie, two sons, Gordon and Walter, four grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Mata Heuer, Mrs. Edith Fanning, Mrs. Elsie Wilson, Miss Lillian Gathman, all of Hartley, Mrs. Mabel Ott of Everly and William Gathman of Hartley, and a number of nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Foley Funeral Home at 1:45 oclock and in the Hartley Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The Rev. S. A. Kruschwitz officiated. Mrs. Harrison Pike was at the organ with Mrs. Paul Woodke and Mrs. S.A. Kruschwitz singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden".

Interment was in the Pleasant View cemetery.
