BESSIE GATHMAN

Bessie Dora Emry Gathman, daughter of James and Myrtle Payne Emry, was born near Castalia, Iowa, on August 27, 1891, and died March 16, 1971, at, the Hartley Hospital.

Her mother died before she was 5 and at 11 she went to live with her grandparents at Ossian. She attended school there and later taught in country schools near there.

In 1917, she was united in marriage to Richard Henry Gathman and lived near Hartley. To this union was born two sons: Gordon and Walter. In 1927, the family moved to California but in 1934, moved back to Hartley.

Mr. Gathman died in 1948.

Except for working in Omaha and South Dakota for short periods, she has lived in Hartley. She was a member of the Hartley United Methodist Church and its Womens' Society of Christian Service.

She was preceded in death by her brother and one grandchild.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Gordon of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Walter of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Munson of Roseburg, Oregon; one half-brother, Lloyd Emry of Guttenberg, Iowa; five half-sisters; Mrs. F. Rickson of Eau Claire, Wise, Mrs. Fred Philips, Columbus, Indiana, Mrs. Elroy Laporte, Racine, Wise, Mrs. Robert Howard, of Hawkins, Wisc, and Mrs. Tom Burns, Japan; other relatives and many friends.

Services were held Saturday, March 20, 1971, from the United Methodist Church, Hartley, Ia. Reverend Keith Scott officiated. Pallbearers were Harold Munster, Kurt Ott, Robert Gathman, Robert Jensen, Verlis Fanning and Roger Gathman. She is at rest in Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley, Iowa. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
