Johanna (Kleinwolterink) Van Aalsburg, Hofmeyer was born the third of seven children on May 25, 1919 to John and Jennie (Reekers) Kleinwolterink on a farm west of Sheldon, Iowa. As a young child, Johanna and her two older siblings spoke only the Dutch language. After she started going to school in Sioux County, she spoke only English. She attended school through the eighth grade.

Johanna married Albert Van Aalsburg on January 25, 1939 in Sheldon. They lived in Sheldon for a time and then farmed at Ocheyedan and at Ashton before moving into Sheldon in 1949 where they owned a small grocery store. In 1951 the family, which by this time included 2 daughters, Ruth and Mary, moved to Bellflower, California. A son, David, was born shortly after moving to California. While there, Albert and Johanna owned, and together operated two different chicken ranches. They were active in the Bethel Reformed Church in Bellflower. Albert died August 19, 1967.

In 1968, Johanna and David moved to Sheldon, Iowa for two years. During that time she worked in retail. In 1970, Johanna and David moved back to Bellflower, California where Johanna again worked in retail as well as obtaining her GED and taking a typing class. She lived in Bellflower until moving to Boise, Idaho in 1989. She was a member of the Boise First Church of the Nazarene. She lived in Boise until 1996, when once again she moved to Sheldon, Iowa.

She moved into the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in 1997. She met Virgil Hofmeyer there, and they married in May of 1998. Virgil died July 23, 2001.

Johanna moved into Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon in September of 2006 where she resided until her death reaching the age of 91 years, 1 month and 15 days.

Johanna was a charter member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon and a member again upon returning to Iowa. She was an active member as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, playing cards and board games with friends and family, doing crossword puzzles, and traveling to visit her family and friends. She always enjoyed singing, and sang in her church choirs. She also played the piano for her own enjoyment.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Larel Bassett of Boise, Idaho, and Mary and Nick Brizzi of Boise, Idaho; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Meribeth Van Aalsburg of Peoria, Arizona; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Johanna is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Nell Kleinwolterink of Sheldon, Iowa.

Johanna is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert Van Aalsburg and husband, Virgil Hofmeyer; two sisters, Marie Vanden Brink and Myrna Griffioen; and three brothers, Gerrit, Arthur, and Robert Kleinwolterink.
