George Smith (1901-1954)

GEORGE A. SMITH

George A. Smith, 53, was born, at Superior, Iowa in 1901 and at the age of six he came to Sanborn with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Smith Sr. He graduated from Sanborn High school, University at South Dakota, and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Dartmouth College.

In 1932 he was united in marriage with Miss Constance Hammond, of Fremont, Nebr. They settled in the east, where he taught one year at Dartmouth and one year at Brown University. He also did research work for Carnegie Institute and the last 19 years he taught science in High school at Plainview, New Jersey, retiring in January of 1954.

Mr. Smith has been in ill health for the past two years from a heart condition.

Mr. Smith passed away November 27, 1954 in a hospital at Plainview.

He is survived by his wife, one sister, Marie Turner, of Sanborn, and two brothers, Lloyd of Bowling Green, Ky. and Louis of Sanborn.

Funeral services were held in Plainview the following Tuesday and the body was cremated. The urn containing the ashes was returned to Sanborn for burial in Roseland cemetery. Graveside services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock by Rov. Dean Williams, pastor of the Presbyterian church.
