Loretta (Babe) DeYoung

Funeral services in memory of Loretta (Babe) E. DeYoung were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Rev. Milo Sheldon officiated. Casket bearers were Lanny DeYoung, Roy Townsend, Jim Jackson, Denny Perry, Jay Birdsall and Dennis Bums. Honorary casket bearers were Curtis Pearson, Ed Zinn, Elmer Zinn, Gale Birdsall and Virgil Treimer. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Loretta (Babe) E. Kirlin DeYoung, the daughter of Leao and Sybil (Bakerink) Kirlin, was born in Fontanelle, Iowa on April 15, 1919. She attended schools throughout Iowa and graduated from the Moneta Consolidated High School. Following graduation, she attended a business school in Grand Island, Nebraska. Loretta has been a resident of Hartley since 1940 and worked several years for E.U. Thomas in his drug store.

She was united in marriage to Wayne Treimer on July 11,1943. Wayne was killed in action during World War II on December 14, 1944. Babe was united in marriage to Herman DeYoung in Hartley on March 10, 1949. Herman and Loretta owned and operated Dee's Ice Cream Store for a number of years.

Loretta died at the Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls, South Dakota on March 11, 1998, following a short illness.

Loretta is survived by her husband, Herman of Hartley; her brother and sister-in-law, Carl "Bud" and Phyllis Kirlin of Mesa, Arizona; two nephews: Russell of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Stanley and Kathy of Casper, Wyoming; one niece, Carta Kirlin Darin of Mesa, Arizona; four great-nephews; two great-nieces; two uncles; one aunt; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Wayne.

Loretta was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Hartley, and the Order of Eastern Star. In previous years, she had also been active in the Federated Women's Club.

Special interests of Loretta's included knitting, going to dances, and playing bridge.

Contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or the Memorial Fund for the Alzheimer's Unit at the Community Memorial Health Center at Hartley.
