Short funeral rites were held at Roseland Cemetery Monday afternoon for Mr. J. W. Coleman, a former resident of Sanborn, who passed away early Easter Sunday, April 5, in a hospital at St. Joseph, Mo. The Rev. C. N. McMillan, pastor of the Methodist church at Primghar was in charge.

John Wesley Coleman was born June 3, 1856 at Davenport, Iowa. Ho grew to manhood at Davenport and there on December 24, 1879 he married Mary E. Allen.

The young couple came directly to the then new town of Sanborn, settling on a farm northwest of town. Later he was engaged for many years as mail clerk on the Milwaukee Road. Part of that time he worked on a run west and during the last years here he made the run to Dubuque.

The family home in Sanborn was the house which is now the A. H. Guse home. Three children were born to this union: Alice, who died October 22, 1903 at Sanborn and is buried in Roseland Cemetery; Grace Dennison, St. Joseph, Mo., with whom he made his home the.past three years; and Howard, in the Veterans' Hospital at Knoxville, Iowa. About thirty years ago the family moved to Dakota and three years ago they went to Missouri to live.

Mr. Coleman was a believer in Christianity and enjoyed attending church, favoring the Methodist church in his early years. He was a member and faithful worker in the I. O. O. F. lodge at Sanborn.

Surviving are his wife and two children; also a granddaughter, Doris Dennison Smith, of Davenport, Ia.; a grandson, Clare W. Coleman and two great granddaughters, of Des Moines.

The remains were accompanied here by his wife, Mrs. Coleman, and daughter, Grace Dennison. They were house guests of Mrs. Chas. Allen; the late Chas. Allen was a nephew of Mrs. Coleman.
