For the past fifty-one years the life of George W. Harges has been closely associated with that of Sanborn and vicinity in which he took a deep interest and active part in its civic and social affairs. He was an indefatigable worker as an Elder and member of the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian church on which he served for the past thirty-one years.

Other affiliations were with Onyx Lodge No. 419, A. F. & A. M. in which he was initiated March 22, 190G passed April 4th, 1906 and was raised on April 19, 1906 to Master Mason when 40 years of age, and had rounded out a membership of 31 years at the time of his demise. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was affiliated with the Sioux City Consistory No. 5 on November 19, 1920. He has also been a member of Coral Chapter No. 41, O. E. S., since April 16, 1907. He served the city as councilman for two terms.

Mr. Harges was a man of sterling qualities, fine principle and habits, with high ideals and standards. He was a friend to all mankind and in return had the love and respect of his fellow citizens and of all who knew him. He followed the precepts and teachings of his Master and in his daily walk in life was honorable, upright and conscientious in all his dealings.

He was a kind, considerate, and indulgent husband and father, giving the same love and devotion to the three children whom he raised as his own as he did to his only son by a former marriage. Mr. Harges was a courteous host, extending true hospitality and a welcome alike to all. He was generous in the support of all community enterprises and public welfare, aiding financially and otherwise, when the call came to him. Sanborn citizens are deeply grieved at his passing not only those with whom he daily associated but the children of the community to whom he was always kind, helpful and considerate.

George W. Harges was born at Caledonia, Minnesota, on March 11th, 1865. He was the son of Fredrick and Fredricka Haase Harges, both of whom were natives of Germany.

His death occurred Sunday morning at 11:30 o'clock on April 4th, 1937 at his home at Sanborn, Iowa after a short illness from a stroke of apoplexy which he suffered on the preceding Friday. He had attained the age of 72 years, and 24 days.

In early youth he came with his parents, to Marshall county, Iowa where they settled on a farm near Marshalltown. He received his education in the rural schools of Marshall county. For a number of years after his retirement from farming he engaged in the Hardware and Implement business in Sanborn. His later years were spent in the enjoyment of his home and family in full retirement.

On April 8th, 1891, he was married at Marcus, Iowa to Miss Annie Grauer, who preceded him in death. Two sons were born to this union, Fred W. Harges of Mitchell, S. D. and Elmer, the latter dying in infancy.

On September 14, 1904, Mr. Harges was united in marriage to Mi's. Amanda Helman at Sanborn, Iowa, who survives him. Other survivors in his immediate family are his two sons, Fred W. With the exception of the two first mentioned grandsons, all were in attendance at the funeral services.

As a parting tribute to Mr. Harges no finer thing can be said than this: "And his Lord said unto him, Well done, Thou good and faithful servant; thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord" Matt. 25-21.

The many lovely floral emblems and offerings spoke mutely of the love and high esteem in which he decedased was held in the community and by all who knew him as did the capacity crowd that attended the services.
