Jake Japenga

Jake Japenga, the son of Albert and Jessie (Donkersloot) Japenga, was born at Archer on March 14, 1919. He lived his youth and received his education in the Archer area.

In August 1942, Jake entered the U.S. Army where he served as staff sergeant in the Battalion 49th Fighter Control Squadron in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.

On August 9, 1949, Jake was united in marriage to Mavis Saunders at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. Following their marriage they farmed in the Worthington, Mn. area for a few years, then moved near Hartley where they lived for approximately 40 years before moving to Dickens in 1992.

Jake died at the Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven on Jan. 15, 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Mavis of Dickens; one daughter and her husband, Judy and Keith Groendyke of Sanborn; one son and his wife, Dennis and Brenda of Dickens; five grandchildren; three sisters, Eleanor Skaar of Mesa, Az., Irene Huffman of Des Moines, and Joyce Berger of Alexandria, Mn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Gert, and one brother, Ray.

Jake was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hartley. Jake enjoyed farming and will be remembered for the pride and delight he took in his grandchildren.
