Alma Louise (Gierke) Brehmer (1908-1973)

Alma Louise Brehmer, nee Gierke, the daughter of Fred and Louise Meier Gierke, was born December 10, 1888 in Stevenson County, Illinois. She came to .the Hartley area as a young girl with her parents and was educated in schools here. She attended Hartley High School and then taught in country school.

She was united in marriage, to John Brehmer at Hartley on August 27, 1908 and to this union were born seven children, including two sets of twins. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hartley and its WSCS. For many years she taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps and Rebekahs and for a year was a newslady for a radio station's Hartley news.

For the past two years she had been a resident of the Mann Wing where she passed away on March 15, 1973 at the age of 84.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three sons, her husband in I960, one brother and one sister.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Forrest and Maurice, both of Oakland, Cal., two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Mary Louise) Cade of Napa, Cal., and Mrs. Vincent (Amy) Bellock of Wheaton, Ill., twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Carl Gierke (died 1975) of Weedsport, N.Y., and one sister, Mrs. Esther Guyette of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Alma Brehmer were held at the United Methodist Church at Hartley, Iowa, on Monday, March 19, 1973 with Rev. Keith Scott as the officiating clergyman. The casket attendants were Mourice Brehmer, Forrest Brehmer, Vincent Bellock, Lloyd Cade, Irving Cakerice, and Alvin Steffens. The interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley, with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge.
