Obituary

Mrs. Anna Hellman

Another pioneer of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and of Caldonia Township was laid to rest on Wednesday, July 29th, in the person of Mrs. Anna Hellman. The burial service at the home, at St. John Church, and on the St. John cemetery was conducted by her pastor, the Rev. W.H. Jurgens.

The church service was enhanced with the singing of Chorales by the assembly. Pastor Jurgens preached in English and German, using as his text the words recorded in Psalm 119, verse 105: "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, developing the thought that the Word of God is the Christian's real comfort in life and in death. The body was laid to rest beside the mortal remains of the deceased's husband, awaiting the final summons of the resurrection of all dead.

The deceased was born on February 3, 1866 at Cooper's Grove, near Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Mrs. Christoph Hoermann and his wife, Anna nee Pauling. When she was but eight days old on February 22th, she was made a member of the Holy Christian Church through the sacrament of holy Baptism, administered by the sainted Past C. Loeber.

Because her parents had planned to move to Iowa in the spring of 1878, the deceased was confirmed at the age of 12 years, on April 14th, 1878 after thorough instruction by the Sainted Pastor F. Doederlein. The __ of loyalty to her Savior Jesus made on the day of her confirmation the departed kept to the end by the Grace of God.

On April 26, 1878, the deceased came to Caledonia Township with her parents, who build a house on the vast prairie just one mile west and one mile south of St. John Church. In the history of St. John Congregation, this dwelling and its inhabitants played an important part, for it was in this house that Father Hoermann conducted divine services regularly for the members of his family and other settlers of the Lutheran faith who had moved to this section of Iowa from Cooper's Grove.

On May 18, 1884, the deceased became the wife of Mr. William Hellmann, Sr., who preceded his wife in death on December 4, 1929. The marriage was performed by the first __ pastor of St. John's, the sainted Rev. Ernest Zuerrer. Three children were the blessing of God upon this union. Since the death of her husband in 1929, the departed had made her home with her son William, on the farm one mile east and 1/4 mile north of St. John Church, where she had dwelt for 58 years.

Mother Hellmann had been in failing health for some time. On June 29th, she fell slightly and sustained an injury which required hospitalization. Although she appeared to mend, the Lord had designed to take her out of this vale of tears to Himself in heaven. She departed in peace at about 8:30 p.m. last Sunday, trusting in the Savior Jesus for a place in His beautiful mansions. She attained to an age of 76 years, 5 months and 23 days.

Her death is mourned by her three children, William, Christoph, and Emily (Mrs. George Lange); her sisters, Mrs. Carl Neckels of Grassy Butte, N.D., Mrs. Fred Schultze, Sr. and Mrs. John Ebel; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and many other near and distant relatives.
