Military Rites Held Friday for John Green

Mr Green died of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon at his home. He had been a lifetime resident of O'Brien county, and a resident in Paullina since 1946.

John Green was the son of Henry and Hattie Block Green, and was born May 6, 1891, on a farm near Archer. He was baptized by Pastor Jacob Horn of St. John Lutheran Church of Germantown. On Dec. 28, 1930, he was received into communicant membership of Zion Lutheran church by the rite of confirmation, administered by Pastor John Hartmeister.

He was married to Esther Hoppe on Mar. 3, 1918, and the couple became the parents of two daughters. They lived on a farm four miles south and one mile west of Archer until moving to Paullina in the spring of 1946.

Survivors are his wife and daughters, Violet, and Mrs. Gerald (Edna) Oldenkamp.

Funeral services for John Green, 64, were held Friday afternoon at Zion Lutheran church, with the Rev Martin Peters officiating. Cowan and Gaudian Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Military rites were conducted by the Russell West Post No. 95 of the American Legion, with Commander E. Willis Hattermann in charge. Green served in the army during World War I. Taps were blown by Earl Hibbing of Paullina high school, and members of the Legion post served as honor guard, and in the firing squad. Burial was in Prairie View cemetery. Pallbearers were the following veterans. John Simm, Ed Straub, E. J. Voss, William Voss, Lawrence McCullough and John Franzen. Color bearers were Harry Bloodgood and George Jurgen-son. Color guard Was Francis Pauling and Clarence Meyer. Members of the firing squad were Niles Hollister, Jim Bockelman, Donnie Sickelka, Franklin Long and Floyd Swanson. Waye Herwig was sergeant-at-arms, in charge of the firing squad. At the close of ceremonies, the American flag draped over the casket was presented to Mrs. Green by Commander Hattermann.
