Claus Henry Hansen

Claus Henry Hansen was born July 1, 1859 in Ellingstedt, Schleswig, Germany. At the age of 17 he came to America locating at Toledo, Tama Co., Iowa, where on March 27, 1883 he was married to Miss Agnes M. Uck.

After residing in Tama Co. for only one year, the young couple moved to a farm in O'Brien County. In the spring of 1889, they moved to Paullina, where Mr. Hansen worked at various trades. The last one which he followed for nearly 24 years was that of running a dray line. During these many years he was a popular person at the station and on the streets of our town.

The union of Mr. and Mrs. Hansen was blessed with eight children, one of which died in early infancy. The seven others together with the mother live to see the faather placed in his last resting place on earth. The children are Mrs. Hy(?) Vander Hamm, of Spencer, S.D., Mrs. J.J. Pfitzer and Rolfe of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. E.J. Claussen, John and Emil of Paullina, Agnes of Omaha, Nebr. One sister, Mrs. Weise of Calument also survives.

Mr. Hansen enjoyed good health practically all of his life until last summer, when some ailment took hold of him, which gradually robbed him of his strength. He kept on with his work till Christmas of the past year, when he went to visit his daughter in Tennessee and at the same time take a two months well deserved vacation. Since his return from Tennessee he failed very reapidly and it could easily be seen how his condition grew worse from day to day. But he was a quiet patient, who was very easily taken care of, for during all his sickness he never uttered one single complaint and he had no other wishes besides the ones that he might soon be called away from this world of sorrow and grief and be taken to the realms of heavenly glory.

His wishes were fulfilled on Monday morning, March 21st, when at 12:20 a.m., he breathed his last, his body not to wake till the sound of the Lord's trumpeters will be heard on Judgement Day.

Mr. Hansen was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. He lived to be 61 years, 8 months and 20 days old. His death is mourned by his bereaved widow, seven children, thirteen grandchildren, one siter and other relatives as well as by a host of friends and acquaintances.

Funeral services with Rev. A.H. Semmann in charge were held this afternoon from the home. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery.
