Mr. Henry Gruenhagen was born in Hanover, Germany on March 27, 1849.

When he was three years of age, he removed with his parents to this country, and settled near Coopers Grove, Illinois. In that neighborhood he spent his boyhood and youth.

On the 23rd of March, 1873, he was united in Marriage with Miss Anna Richter. Seven years later they came to Iowa and made their home on the farm south of Germantown. He was a devout member of the Lutheran church at Germantown and was sexton of that church for nearly thirty years. To this work he attended promptly and faithfully, until his failing health made it necessary for him to discontinue it last Christmas.

The deceased quietly passed away on the 18th of March, early in the morning, almost seventy two years of age. He leaves to mourn his death his bereaved widow; one son, Gust; one daughter, Mrs. Henry Fegebank; six grandchildren, and many other friends in this community.

The cause of death was a cancer in the throat. From the time of the appearance of this malady, all that medical science could do was done. He was taken to the hospital at LeMars and also at Hampton for treatment. It was all of no avail. The dread disease made steady progress until the end.

The funeral took place Tuesday at Germantown, Rev. F.W. Potratz officiating.
