Dwight Charles Godfrey
Dwight Charles Godfrey was born January 19, 1899, at Paullina, Iowa. Age 22 years, 4 months and 3 days. He lived nine years in Iowa, two years in Colorado, six years in Canada. From Canada he moved with his parents in 1916 to San Juan, Texas, where he resided until within a few weeks of his tragic and sudden death.
On April 11, 1921, he went to Tampico, Mexico, where he secured employment with the Mexican Gulf Petroleum Company.
On the morning of May 22, about 2:30 while gunging oil in a tank, he was overcome with gas and fell, causing his instant death.
When he was about 14 years of age, he united with the Grace Methodist church, of which he wa a regular attendant in S.S. and other services as long as he made Canada his home. He later, when moving to the Rio Grande Valley, united with the People's Church of San Juan, Texas, of which he was a faithful consistent member until his decease.
Dwight was a young man of sterling character integrity and cheerful disposition. He had won for himself a host of friends. To know him was to love him. His sad and sudden death comes as a shock upon parents, brothers, sisters and friends alike. The death angel has come to this beloved home and claimed two brothers, Ralph and Raymond, and two sisters, Georgia and Blanche, all of who preceeded our brother in their childhood.
For the purpose of defending his country in The World's War, he registered with the Nation Guards at San Antonio, Texas, but being under age was not permitted to enter the war.
He leaves to mourn his loss a father, mother, brother Rose, two sisters, Mrs. C.C. Barton of Alberta, Canada, and Florence, who is attending Baylor College at Belton, Texas, and a host of friends.
We are again reminded that in the midst of life, we are in death. We cannot withstanding why Dwight should thus be cut off just in the prime of young manood. Some day we will understand. "Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face." Until then we can submit unto Him and say, They will O God not ours be done.
His remains were shipped by boat from Tampico to Port arthur, the family accompanying them from there to Paullina.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home of the deceased's uncle, Chris Fife. Rev. H.F. Williams officiating. Interment was at Prairie View Cemetery.
