AUTO ACCIDENT PROVES FATAL
Ed Mesner Killed When Car Tips Over Crushing His ChestA very sad auto accident, which cost the life of Ed Mesner, fourth oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mesner, living six and one-half miles southwest of Paullina, occured sometime after midnight last Thursday night, on the road five miles north and two miles west of Marcus, when the young man was returning home after having attended the fall Festival in Marcus that day. Just how the accident happened, no one may ever know, altho there are several rumors regarding the car and road condition which might have caused him to go into the ditch and the car to overturn upon him.
The car was first found by Walter Anderson, a farmer of near Marcus, who happened to be going by early Friday morning. The car then lay across the victim's chest which had been crushed in when the car fell upon him. Being pinned underneath in such in manner that there was no chance for the victim to relieve himself or in fact to even have lived very long.
The accident must have happened sometime after one o'clock, Friday morning, as reports are to the effect that he had been seen with his car shortly before that at Marcus. Judging from this, the body must have been pinned under the car for at least three and one-half hours before it was discovered.
Edward [sic] Mesner was well known here. He was 20 years of age, and was born on the farm south of town.
Funeral services were held at Germantown Sunday, with Rev. H. Steger of that place officiating. The funeral services were very largely attended which bespoke the high esteem which the young man was held in that community. The accident was indeed a very sad one, and a shock to the young man's pnrents, as well as all others who knew him. The bereaved family have the deep sympathy of their entitre neighborhood.
