Mable A. Heick, 89, of Cherokee passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Jon Riggert officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Peterson, Iowa. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mabel Anna Neisses was born Dec. 22, 1920, to Charles and Anna [Vehe] Neisses, in Murdo, S.D.

She married Ralph Tolzin on April 29, 1939, and they farmed south of Aurelia, Iowa, until 1954. They had four children. In 1955, Mabel began working as a nurse's aide at Sioux Valley Hospital and cleaned homes as well to support her family.

She met and married Arthur John Heick on Aug. 12, 1959. In 1962, she started a new housekeeping unit at the hospital, during which time she also went on ambulance calls with Art. In 1967, Mabel began caring for patients with special needs. In 1972, she retired and spent most of the summers with Art and other family members at the cabin on Dead Lake in Minnesota. Here, she served meals of fish for family and friends. Her door was always open to everyone.

Survivors include one daughter, Marla (Bill) Avery of Camarillo, Calif.; three sons, Curtis (Joyce) Tolzin of Cleveland, Minn., Keith (Jan) Tolzin of Ellensburg, Wash., Kermit (Sandy) Tolzin of Clarinda, Iowa; one stepdaughter, Lonna (Robert) McEwen of Savannah, Ga.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a sister-in-law, Fern Benner of Hemet, Calif. (now Clarinda, Iowa); and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art Heick; four sisters; six brothers; and one great-grandchild.
