George Niebuhr Is Buried Friday At Germantown Cemetery

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Dec. 15 for George Niebuhr who died the previous Tuesday in a Sioux City hospital after an illness of almost a year A short service was held at the Alfred Niebuhr home af 1:30 followed by services at the Zion Lutheran church at 2:00. Interment followed at St. John cemetery, Germantown. The Rev. Martin Peters officiated.

George Niebuhr, the son of Henry Niebuhr and his wife, Dorothea, nee Griess, was born on Dec. 17, 1867 at Schoene-woerds in the Province of Hanover, Germany. He was a member of the Lutheran church.

In June of 1885 he left his native land to come to America. For more than ten years he lived in Aurelia. From there he came to the Germantown community. Here, on Jan. 14, 1898, he was married to Auguste Swenson The young couple made their home on a farm six miles west of Paullina. To them were born four sons. Mr. Niebuhr retired from farming in 1933 and during the declining years of his life he made his home in Paullina.

He had been sick since almost the beginning of this year. During his illness he was cared for by his children at their various homes. About a month prior to his death he entered the Lutheran hospital at Sioux City where he died on Dec. 12, at the ago of 82 years, 11 months and 25 days.

Surviving him are his son, Alfred, of Granville; Walter of Paullina; Raymond of Archer, and Erwin of Paullina; twelve grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary Beck of Kansas City. His wife preceded him in death.
