The happy home of Mr. and Mrs. Hector Cowan, Jr. in Dale township, was yesterday suddenly transformed into a place of saddest gloom by the accidental killing of their little son, a bright child of three and a half years. While cutting grain with a self-binder, near the residence, and without a moment's warning, the body of the unfortunate child was seen on the platform of the machine. Instead of passing over the child the reel had pushed him over the sickly, cutting a leg and arm to the bone. All possible was done to retain life until the arrival of medical assistance but the little one expired a few minutes after the arrival of the physician. Strangely enough, death resulted more from the shock received than from bleeding. Death is always appalling, but the suddenness and terror attendant upon fatalities like this are indeed heartrending in the extreme. The sorrow of the parents cannot be imagined and the neighborhood cannot restrain its general feelings of darkest sadness.
